How to Relieve Back Pain With Chiropractic Care

Back pain can be brutal. It’s not only the pain itself, but the persistence of it that can wear a person down. It can prevent you from finding a comfortable position, causing distraction and discomfort that makes it hard to be ‘in the present moment’ with everything from work to activities with family and friends. It can even make it hard to get a good night’s sleep.

As experienced Cambridge, Ontario chiropractors, new clients often ask us how to help back pain through the practice of chiropractic. In fact, it’s one of the leading concerns expressed by new visitors to our office.

The good news is this: chiropractic care can be a very effective back pain treatment in the vast majority of cases. And the reason is simple: modern life and chiropractic care basically have the opposite effect on the body. We’ll explain.

Often, modern life is the root cause of back pain. For many people, a modern job involves either sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods of time or doing repetitive physical tasks. Relaxation often involves more sitting while watching TV or a movie, or catching up online with a laptop or smartphone. None of these activities engage the muscles of the body in a balanced way, and many of them utilize poor posture. The result is pressure on the spine, paired with weak muscles, which make posture worse, all of which shift the body out of alignment over time.

So modern life leads to an imbalanced body and a spine that is ‘out of whack’ — both of which can (and often do) lead to back pain (and also neck pain, and migraines, and the list goes on).

By contrast, chiropractic is the science of returning the body and spine back to alignment. It helps with back pain for exactly this reason. Spinal adjustment is the most well-known aspect of chiropractic treatment, but it truly is a holistic approach to whole-body care. When we restore the body’s natural balance through chiropractic, the body is able to work as it was designed to. It begins to heal itself from back pain and other discomforts.

We should note: back pain isn’t only caused by lifestyle factors. A car accident or other sudden injury can absolutely trigger the onset of severe back, neck and shoulder pain. Often, these injuries layer on top of existing spinal misalignments built up over months or years. So the back pain treatment addresses both the result of the accident and the underlying issues that preceded it.
